"I Want To Race"
Basic Info
This is a messenger-style bike race in downtown Atlanta. The race will work with the local
Atlanta Toys For Tots program. The idea of the race is that riders will pick up and deliver toys from our intown neighbors who may not have the time to deliver the toys themselves.
Details
Each toy has an associated points value based on the direct-line distance between pick up and drop off points. All packages will be deliverd to the Georgia State Bookstore. Teams of UP TO FOUR (4) riders will compete to earn the most points over the course of the day.
OFFICIAL RULES!
"How do I know where the toys are?"
When someone registers a toy to donate, we get their address and contact phone number. A 3x5 index card will be made for each toy which has all of this information available. At the beginning of the race, each team will be allowed to draw six (6) cards at random. When you are about to pick up a package, you telephone the donator that you are about to arrive, confirm that they will be home and then go get it!. The donators will be notified before the race of the time that they should be availabe.
It is possible that some donators have placed their package outside his/her house so that they don't need to be home. If this is the case, the index card will say so and give a general description of toy location (this isn't a scavenger hunt, so you won't be looking too hard =P)
Team statistics will be kept track of on a white board for all to see on display at the bookstore. Also, race officials will keep track of how many index cards each team has at any given time (to ensure that no team has more than six).
There is no limit on how teammates divide up packages. It is possible that one rider could collect all six packages in one run. Each team should work together to efficiently dispatch riders.
The race will continue until 4pm (when the Georgia State Bookstore closes) or until all toys have been delivered.
Toys will be limited in size and weight to fit in a standard messenger bag/ back pack.
When / Where
Hurt Park on Edgewood Avenue
Google Map. Registration will start at 11am at Hurt Park on Saturday, December 16, 2006. The race will start at 12 noon. The Georgia State Bookstore is around the corner at 66 Courtland Street. There will be a race official handing out index cards at Hurt Park AT THE START OF THE RACE ONLY. Once you leave Hurt Park, don't come back; there won't be anyone there. After the start of the race, the race officials will move to the Georgia State Bookstore to collect ALL dropoffs and hand out new index cards.
"I'm racing but I want to donate a toy also."
Great! This is HIGHLY encouraged. The more toys to deliver, the longer the race will go on, and the more fun for you. If you are going to donate a toy, register as a donator and check "I won't be home to hand off the toy."
"What do I need to bring?"
- your bike (duh)
- the biggest bag you own
- U lock (this is incase you need to lock-up when picking up a package)
- Santa hat (bonus points!)
- cell phone
Minor Details
- "What if I go to pick up a toy and there is a problem?" (no one is home, toy not left outside, toy is too big, I'm being abducted by a stranger, etc.) - Call a race official; you will be given a phone number at the start of the race. We will solve these things on a case-by-case basis.
- Check your douche at the door - Don't be an ass to any of the donators or their property. If we get any calls about some kid on a bike running through some old lady's flower bed, your team will be disqualified. This is a charity race, not a trick-or-treat race.
- "If I donate a toy do I need to pay registration fee?" - Yes the fee pays for spoke cards, prizes, and afterparty.
